Moving into a smaller place? What to carry with you/get rid of?
28. 11. 2017
Imagine your new home after moving in. Peace and quiet and tidiness. However, achieving that may not be quite easy. First of all, you need to get rid of any unnecessary things. If you want to decide what to move with you, ask yourself these four fundamental questions:
1. Is it suitable for my new home?
*
Go through the whole flat or house and note down the things that you would like to move into your new home.
2. Do I use it?
*
Think about the things that you use most frequently. Do you use them every day? Such things usually include dishes and clothes. These items are essential and will definitely go to your new home with you.
Do you use them weekly? Serving dishes and some kitchen appliances, such as slow cookers, are used quite often. If you are going to continue using them, they should also be included in the moving process.
Do you use them once a year? These include items such as seasonal decorations or “grandmother’s” tea set. If you can’t remember when you last used them, get rid of them.
3. Do you have a special relationship to the item or does it have special importance for you?
*
Was it given to you by a friend or relative? Does it bring back pleasant memories or does it have an added value? If your answer is “yes”, put it in a special box. Don’t forget to write a list of what it contains. Such a list will make finding things easier later.
4. Will I miss it?
*
If you didn’t have this item in your home, would you miss it? If so, pack it. If your answer is not a clear ”yes”, don’t take this item to your new home with you.
Any things that you don’t want any more can be offered to friends, given to charity or sold.
Where to start selecting before moving? Naturally, start with the furniture because large pieces may not fit in your new home or may not be suitable for it. When it comes to smaller pieces, we recommend beginning in the kitchen because decisions regarding kitchen utensils are usually easier as they are not emotional. For example, do you use all of your small portable appliances? If your answer is “yes, every day”, then it’s clear.
As soon as you decide about the kitchen, go to the living room and then to the bedroom. It is better to think twice about everything than to pack and move junk. Remember that your goal is relaxed and well-arranged living in your new home.
